The "Big Red One" Hospital
The Department of Emergency Services at Irwin Army Community Hospital provides level 3 Emergency Department and Emergency Ambulance Services to the Fort Riley community. The department serves on average 31,000 patients and approximately 1,300 ambulance responses annually. We stand ready to help our Fort Riley family when they have emergent needs.
Wait Times in Emergency Room
Wait times vary on patient severity. There are patients that come into the ER which require every resource available in the ER which increases wait times. If a patients comes to the ER with symptoms of a heart attack, stroke, massive hemorrhage, or loss of eye sight, he will be seen immediately.
Patients are triaged by an Emergency Room nurse. Patients are called to be seen based on assumption of medical severity by triage nurse and physician on duty. If you feel your need is non-emergent, attempt to make an appointment with your primary physician.
Prescription medications cannot be filled in the Emergency Room. The primary care clinic can assist patients with the refill of medications to be filled at a pharmacy.
Who Can Be Seen?
Non-beneficiaries who are require emergency assistance will be stabilized and treated. When appropriate, such patients will be transferred to a civilian facility for continued care.
ER overcrowding is a dangerous threat to patient care. It is beneficial to patient flow and care to send patients to appointments in their respective medical homes after screening for non-emergent issues. This process allows the ER to free resources to continue treating the sickest patients.
The IACH Pharmacy provides a self-care system for beneficiaries to get over-the-counter medications without seeing a provider. For information on this program, see the Pharmacy page and follow the Self Care program on the top right.
