Irwin Army Community Hospital no longer accepts Sharps containers for disposal. We suggest the following disposal options:


  • Discard container with household trash.
  • In the state of Kansas, sharps containers may be discarded with household trash. If you anticipate moving, refer to for that states disposal options.
  • The optimal disposal method is to use a commercially produced red sharps container with hazard communication on the outside, and take to a "safe community needle disposal" program.

  • Use a hard plastic container that is puncture proof.
  • Screw on the lid when full and use heavy duct tape to secure.
  • Secure and dispose of containers when _ full.
  • Ensure outside of container is free from contamination such as blood.
  • Communicate with your garbage collector that you will be setting them out on a regular basis.
  • Mark the outside of the container with "Not for Recycling-Infectious Waste".


  • Do not use clear bottles or glass products.
  • Do not use milk jugs, cartons or anything that can be easily punctured.
  • Do not use containers with tops that may come off easily.
  • Do not mix sharps disposal containers with recycling bins.
  • Do not flush needles and syringes down the toilet.

Personal Protection:

  • Llways wash your hands after handling or touching medical sharps.
  • Keep container out of reach of children and pets. Keep in areas that are child/animal proof.
  • Do not attempt to remove, bend or recap the needle.
  • Place needles and syringes directly in the container after use.
  • For added protection, the contents may be disinfected with a solution of 1 part bleach 10 parts water. After solution sits for 20 minutes pour solution in sink and secure container.
